This is one of the best historical novels I've ever read, regardless of time period.I admit, of course, the Italian Renaissance has long fascinated me, but I am also rather picky about accuracy and writing quality. I was not disappointed. ATftS proved amazingly rich in historical detail without ever seeming pedantic, and I was very impressed by Ms. Proud's ability to describe (and explain) intellectual and artistic subjects so thoroughly and yet with such grace and ease. What truly impressed me was the fluidity of the language. Nothing felt forced, and sometimes the writing rose to the level of the exquisite. Surely a book to be savored.
I purchased Tabernacle et al. as Kindle books, but have now repurchased the entire trilogy as paper books and intend to reread them.
My highest recommendation.

A Tabernacle for the Sun A Novel Set in Florence in the Time of Lorenzo De' Medici 14721478 Linda Proud 9780954736729 Books Reviews
A few pages into this book and I knew I'd found something special. I am an academic specialising in Quattrocento Florence, and you can tell that Linda Proud has done her research on the period. However, it is far more than just dry facts - the figures truly come to life in her hands, and you forget for a time that the main narrator, Tommaso Maffei, isn't real. This book stimulates the mind, the heart, and the spirit all at the same time.
This author is uniquely gifted and I am so happy I stumbled across this book! I love it! The ability to recreate this pocket of history and to bring it alive is so inspiring and intriguing.
This wonderful book takes you to 16th century Florence to meet the greatest figures of the Platonic Renaissance, weaved in a beautifully written story about Tomasso de Maffei and his process of discovering himself, the path of philosophy, and love.
I felt I was truly transported to that time and place.
Highly recommended!
I have recently read fifteen other books regarding the Renaissance in Florence, Rome and Venice and this one is my favorite. What makes it so unique is that it is written from the perspective of a Scribe, not a painter, not a sculptor-er, not a historian, not a politician, but from the other artistic expression --- a Scribe. Very inspiratioinal!
I loved the way this story was told. The narrator is a 12 year old boy who grows up during the story, surrounded by the great men of the Florentine Renaissance, but never quite fits in. I am on the third book in the series and intend to read all the books by this author. I am a huge Renaissance/Botticelli fan, and even though Botticelli is a character that is really on the outskirts of the action, this is my favorite book of this genre. (And trust me, I have read them all!) This book is a well researched masterpiece told from the respective of a great character.
This is one of the best historical novels I've ever read, regardless of time period.
