Gabriela Pereira has spent the majority of her 27 years tending to her ailing mother, and in doing so has put most of her hopes, dreams and aspirations for the future on permanent hold. She is constantly tormented by the guilt of being the only one left to care for her mother, who has suffered through unimaginable trauma in the past - both emotional and physical. The possibility of finding love has also become a distant fantasy for Gabby, not likely to come true any time soon either, until she meets Benjamin Martin - a handsome, charismatic, intelligent, successful, funny, and so very tasty (quite literally and figuratively speaking) man - who owns the Caribbean restaurant next door to her office. He is the kind of guy that seems too good to be true. This sort of thing doesn't happen to her...

Passion, lust, heartache and loss all collide into one mouth-watering read when a shy and lonely Brazilian-Canadian girl finds love in a handsome, charismatic Jamaican-Canadian chef among the diverse sights, sounds and food of Vancouver's eclectic Commercial Drive. It is hard not to fall in love with Gabby and Ben as they try to reconcile their inner demons to be together against all odds.

On the one hand, the male lead was written so vividly I felt like he was real (definitely a good thing). His dialogue and dialect was right on and he was definitely hot. I also love interracial romance, and it's so hard to find these kind of romances that are well-written and grammatically correct. However... the female lead sucked. "Shy" and "insecure" are not two traits I appreciate in my heroines. When I read the description, I expected that the chemistry between the leads would be spicy and fiery and have flavor! But Gabriela was about as spicy as a limp noodle. She was the kind of needy, not really self-aware, and boring heroine that I really dislike. She's supposed to be Brazilian! I have Brazilian friends and they are anything but boring. Sexy Ben could do better. It's bad when the reader hopes that the male lead will ditch the heroine and sleep with the twiggy bitchy blond woman because at least they have sexual tension!

Lastly, although it's technically well-written, in the sense that there weren't a lot of spelling or grammatical errors, this book could definitely use an edit. Some of the dialogue scenes go on and on and on, like the party before they film the cooking show. It's way too long, and could use some scenes and setups that could really bring out more tension.

I would recommend this book to others who like their romance a little less vanilla, but I'm not really that impressed. I will look out for other books by the same author, though, because I do love interracial romance :) I'd definitely give the author another shot!

It started off a little slow but it was a great story line.
I would suggest the book to others. Family is great when everyone is on the same accord. It is hard to make decisions for loved ones when everyone does not agree. Also beauty is in the eye of the beholder...glad Ben realized that. Hope there is more to come.
this was my first Natalie Myrie book and I am very impressed. I really enjoyed her development of the characters. I love it when an author allows the characters to speak; i kept smiling when I read Gabriela and Ben talk. I love the story line, but would have preferred Gabriela have a little more self confidence. That said, I'm giving this one 5 stars and look forward to reading more from Natalie Myrie.
I never been one to read romance novels, this surprised me. The author told a compelling story between two characters. She addressed the struggles of a new relationship and how tends to get in the way.
The thing I liked most about this book is that the characters were realistic and the plot was believable. I almost forgot...the sex scenes were to die for!!! Benjamin is every woman's dream come true--tall, dark, handsome man that can cook. I loved the overall progression of this book, and that Ben finally admitted to himself his true feelings for Gabby. Patiently waiting for part two...
What an awesome read! Loved Ben's character so much. He was kind, caring and hot as hell. Gabby was a little over the top with her insecurities. But I still loved them together. Would love to have Ben's voice in a couple of chapters. Was not expecting the ending though! Highly recommend this book!
I could not put this book down. Indeed there were a few places which could have been edited but overall this book was a great read for me. I felt the characters views/thoughts were portrayed vividly so that the reader had a good understanding of the emotional state of the individual. The complex relationships outside of the two main characters were well defined and understandable. I enjoyed the writer's style and the ability to have the reader sympathising and laughing at times with all of the characters in the book. I particularly like the immigrant transistions which are very rarely portrayed in fiction. Cannot wait to get my hands on the next book. This book took me back to the E. Lynn Harris books which always spoke to the complications of life's relationships and changes in society's views of those relationships. Try it ... you won't be disappointed.
