I've been thinking about unschooling my five-year-old daughter and three-year-old son. Before reading this book, I was about 6 in favour of unschooling on a scale of 1 to 10. Now I am 3 against.Unschooling can only be beneficial if it develops a person's critical and creative faculties in a way standard schooling doesn't. Yet the people in this book clearly have no clue about applying logic and evidence to form an opinion. Instead (and quite ironically) all of them hew to ideological beliefs which are prevalent in North American universities.
Their ignorance of history, economics and even science is breathtaking. Several seem to be jacks of trades and none master of any. Most tellingly, the majority of them appear to be dependent financially on parents or partners who did go through school or on the developed institutions of the very society they assert is failing on all fronts.
If this sample represents typical products of unschooling, I will keep my children in the system and try to compensate for school's undoubted defects at home.

Ever considered taking your child's education out of the government's hands and into your own? How about their own hands? This book is a compilation of essays written by education experts, home/unschooling parents, leadership in the unschooling community, and grown unschoolers. It is a refreshing wealth of perspectives on giving your child the ability to learn naturally and how, despite all the misgivings you might have on a regular basis, chances are your child will turn out just fine. I'm giving it five stars because that's what it deserves. Everyone should read this book!!
Through the person stories of those homeschool and homeschool families you start to question your own educational theory. You become inspired to help your child live a self taught interest led life. As a parent heading into my fourth year homeschooling I have watched myself go from schooling at home to more interest led style of homeschooling. My goal is simple that my children become life long learners and that they live a life of joy,the stories in this book show me I am on the right path.
Natural Born Learners Unschooling and Autonomy in Education was a nice addition to my unschooling education. The unique thing about this book is that it is a compilation of transcripts from radio shows. So what you are getting is a sampling of wisdom from a wide variety of sources who have some sort of expertise in the unschooling world, in a more casual style than you would typically read. This made for some fantastic chapters that you must read

It also made for some chapters I could have skipped. You can usually tell right away if a chapter is resonating with you so after personally having read every chapter thoroughly, I would say just skip a chapter if it isn’t tickling your fancy (what a creepy expression).
Though some chapters weren’t of particular interest to me, there really wasn’t anything in the book that struck me as off. I may not adhere to every moral of their story but everything was helpful to hear about.
The highlight feature was my friend as I read through this book, nodding vehemently and not wanting to forget. I want to type out some of my favorite quotes for you but I just can’t choose favorites!
Overall this book is not a life changer and the writing itself isn’t amazing but the content is helpful and well rounded – a nice sampling of perspectives and wisdom if you are doing some unschooling “homework.” I can definitely see why they published this as a book as I wouldn’t want all this knowledge lost in the ether.

First let me say that this is NOT a "How To" book. It is written by many different writers with varying views and ideas so whilst you will gain some inspiration from it, you will not get a detailed description of how to train your child to learn. BUT that is one of the reasons why unschooling/homeschooling is SO great. Each child can learn in their own way and reach their own potential.
If you are thinking of giving up once your child hits high school then you need to read this book. Be encouraged! You can do it! It has been proven that you don't need that High School Diploma to get into college. Why waste all that time sat in a classroom? Make time work for you. Get experience out in the work place, take some college credits ahead of time etc.
What is school like outside the USA? Some insights are in this book.
Education is a technical process whereas learning is a natural process. "Education teaches the lesson that the more we consume, the better we are." Over consuming is a big problem in many parts of this world.
Don't forget to let your kids play. That means not keeping them busy all the time. Give them space and time to use their imaginations.
Matt Hern given some of the figures and statistics to show that compulsory school is not working, even now that kids are having to start school even earlier. After 165 years of compulsory education, people are getting dumber, not smarter.
Sandra Dodd puts forward the idea of strewing interesting things around the house for kids to find. I like that!
